Reserve a female Human slot for me. Question, before I begin writing up my bio, would exotic - I.E. clearly MAGICAL weaponry be allowed? I was thinking something along the lines of a whip sword created by tightening the hydrogen bonds in a layer of one-molecule thin water vapor so as to make it a liquid with the consistency of a solid, making a razor sharp sort of monofilament wire crossed with a sword.

I think if your weaponry wasn't magical in some way, you'd have a hard time defeating demons XD
So yes, as long as it has it's weaknesses.

I would like to reserve a Female Human slot, if I may? I have some things I need to attend to before I am able to work on a character at the moment, so I might not get a character submitted until Sunday evening, if that is okay.

I'd like to reserve a MALE slot, please! And also, would our weapons be able to "cast" magic, such as sending out a piercing bolt of light or producing spikes in a direction the blade is stabbed in the ground?

So, in other words, scum like you will cease to exist, one way or another."

That's a good question. Would they be able to do something like that? Because if so, I'd probably make my whipsword of doom capable of controlling water, instead of just assimilating it to form the blade.

NFL Draft Preview: Draft 2012: Pro Day Roundup

Just like the Combine, Pro Day workouts give numbered results to supplement what prospects produce on the field during games. With numerous high-profile invitees sitting out their first-impression Combine workout, Pro Days have a heightened sense of importance for participants to perform up to or beyond the athleticism they showed on Saturdays. We are around the midway point of post-season workouts so let's look at who has impressed or underperformed thus far.

Name-brand

Stanford QB Andrew Luck -- On a windy day in Palo Alto, Luck showed brilliant command of his Pro Day workout by completing 45-of-48 passes. Two incompletions were dropped, and the third came on an overthrow. The style in which Luck orchestrated his variety of throws was most impressive, with the majority coming after movements in the pocket. It is something many QB prospects do not implement enough at Pro Days, since most passes at the next level will be thrown in a muddled pocket. It did not matter if Luck was forced to flow to his left or right, he consistently squared his shoulders and placed the ball in a catchable position with efficient velocity. Some have questioned Luck's arm strength, claiming he guides too many throws. I don't buy it. Combined with pre-throw anticipation, his motion is so effortless that passes look placed. That kind of touch and awareness is a positive in my book. More information surfaced yesterday that, at Stanford, Luck called one formation and chose from three plays at the line of scrimmage. Most NFL quarterbacks don't even have that kind of responsibility. There is no doubting Robert Griffin III as an elite prospect, but I would draft Andrew Luck with the first pick every day of the week.

Oklahoma State WR Justin Blackmon -- After sitting out most of the Combine with a tweaked hamstring, Blackmon showed excellent straight-line speed with a sub-4.45 forty while weighing in eight pounds heavier (215) than he did in Indianapolis. This time will be adjusted, with teams likely adding around two hundredths of a second, but anything under 4.5 is a stellar result. Blackmon has the necessary speed to be a vertical threat, but has yet to show it due to the Big 12 off-coverages that repeatedly offered short completions. However, Blackmon flashed downfield playmaking ability when breaking first contact and keeping distance from trailing defensive backs for long after-catch runs. Blackmon's catch radius and skills to adjust to throws (35.5" vertical) are undeniably impressive. With that said, I still question if he can dominate press coverage like he did facing seven-yard cushions. Many will definitively say Blackmon deserves a top-ten selection and fits in the category of other elite prospects (A.J. Green, Julio Jones). I love Blackmon's physical style, but not enough to put him in that group and doubt he can consistently produce like a top-15 NFL wide receiver.

Baylor QB Robert Griffin III -- Griffin's Pro Day lost a little luster after the Redskins went all-in for the No. 2 pick, making it seemingly obvious that he's already got his next team. But that did not stop the Baylor quarterback from putting on a show. Griffin threw around 82 passes, the first 20 to still targets, and completed 76 of them. This result was expected in a scripted workout, but the pace at which Griffin fired off throws was thoroughly impressive. No one questions Griffin's arm talent, especially on deep sideline throws or when testing coverage downfield. Griffin looked more refined in his stance, with his elbows compact pre-release rather than parallel to his feet like Troy Smith. Still, the few questions I have on Griffin were impossible to answer in a Pro Day setting. After his initial drop, Griffin's footwork lacks purpose when his first read is taken away. The steps are inconsistent, either choppy or a single stride. The athlete in Griffin momentarily takes over but in Washington's style of offense this is close to a non-issue. I still prefer Luck's ability to handle protection assignments pre-snap and decisive movements in tight spaces, but Griffin possesses every quality of an elite QB talent.

Stanford TE Coby Fleener -- At 6'6/241, Fleener put on a clinic with a 4.45 forty and 37" vertical while standing on his 27 bench reps from the Combine. After four months, Fleener's high ankle sprain suffered in the Fiesta Bowl was said to be 90 percent healed. From an outside perspective that is a long timetable to return to full health, but it was a positive sign that Fleener fully participated in the workout after slipping in the three-cone drill. Fleener can stretch the field from the in-line position or out in the slot as a Joker, but Fleener is far from complete. He is a willing blocker with excellent length but has not shown an ability to consistently win in one-on-one situations at the line of scrimmage. Fleener overextends far too often, but blocking is one of the easier skills to obtain especially for a willing player. Where I stop short of comparing Fleener to Rob Gronkowski is his toughness at the catch point. Fleener allows smaller defensive backs to out-position him at the catch point and has not yet learned to effectively use his size. He is not a revolutionary prospect since he rounds his routes like most tight ends, but Fleener is a likely first-round pick with an amazing set of traits to build on.

Rutgers WR Mohamed Sanu -- The Pro Day effect elevated Sanu's forty time to 4.41 after registering in the 4.65 range at the Combine. He plays much closer to the latter. A large target at 6'2/211 pounds, Sanu shines in traffic while coming down with contested catches. He is adept at sitting in soft zones or creating separation with fluidity and smoothness in his routes while generating just enough space at the catch point. Sanu's acceleration worries me after registering a 10-yard split in the 1.65 range, but the way he absorbs contact off the line bodes well for NFL success. The question is if Sanu's skill-set offers enough special qualities to be drafted before the third round. For a team that is in need of an underneath to intermediate receiver, Sanu would instantly contribute and flashes toughness after the catch.

Georgia TE Orson Charles -- The receiving tight end shows strength when facing physical defensive backs and a burst after the catch, but Charles' workout numbers were close to dreadful. With heavy winds Charles ran a 4.75 and a 4.90 against along with a 30.5" vertical, 7.29 three-cone, 4.75 short shuttle, and a 9'5" broad jump. Aside from the forty, none of those test results would have placed Charles higher than eighth among participating Combine tight ends. Charles flashes fluidity in pads and at worst plays at the speed of these times, but I cannot deny being surprised by these poor results. He is a mismatch with linebackers or defensive backs, but does not have the elite athletic upside I previously thought. These numbers do not coincide with a top-50 pick.

He is a mismatch with linebackers or defensive backs, but does not have the elite athletic upside I previously thought. These numbers do not coincide with a top-50 pick.

Baylor WR Kendall Wright -- The difference between Wright's 4.43 Pro Day forty time and Sanu's is that Wright constantly plays at that speed. After struggling with his starts on the electronic system at the Combine, Wright shaved nearly two-tenths of a second off his time. The crispness in Wright's route running with little wasted movement allows him to consistently separate from trailing defensive backs. Wright is clearly one of the best route runners in this class and his ability to start from any receiving position at the snap adds to his skill-set. Above all, the way Wright adjusts to throws at full speed makes him stand alone, as he displayed with a trademark one-handed grab along the sideline on Wednesday. No one tracks the ball better downfield. Wright beats press coverage with quick movements and fast hands while keeping defensive backs guessing in off-coverage. The quick-twitch wideout is a combination of Steve Smith and Santonio Holmes with a legitimate chance to be drafted in the top-15 picks.

Washington RB Chris Polk -- Showing up to the Senior Bowl with a soft frame has since improved Polk's work ethic. He is now 12 pounds lighter than in Mobile and is consistently lowering his forty time, from his "official" 4.57 at the Combine to a 4.45-4.51 at the Huskies' Pro Day. Too much was made about Polk not flashing at the Senior Bowl in limited contact scenarios. That is not his game. Polk is a patient runner with incredible vision and anticipation to weave in space while breaking tackles on first contact. He is not going to wow evaluators with straight-line, home-run ability like Lamar Miller or David Wilson but Polk is a dependable runner with soft hands. His big plays are not flashy but the vision and burst he possesses will allow those long gains to translate into an NFL setting.

Nebraska DE/DT Jared Crick -- A torn pectoral ended Crick's senior season early, but after completing 26 bench press reps, the injury looks to be fully healed. At 6'4/279 pounds, Crick has some positional versatility at either left end in a 4-3 that moves inside on pass rushing situations or a 3-4 end. He is not the quickest penetrator off the snap, but Crick offers active hands and one of the best motors in the draft. He does not shed with proper timing at the tackle point and lacks the short-area quickness and explosion to consistently make tackles in the backfield. Despite these issues, Crick will grow in the system he is drafted into, with the ability to add or lose weight to fit his role. Before his final season, Crick was considered one of the top senior talents in the country and could be a tremendous value in the second round.

Upward Momentum

Miami (OH) G Brandon Brooks -- This year's biggest Combine snub, Brooks measured in at 6'5/346 and posted outstanding workout numbers: 36 bench reps, 4.98 forty with a 1.71 ten-yard split, 32" vertical, 8'9" broad jump, and 4.52 short shuttle, the latter of which would have led all offensive line Combine participants. A standout during East-West Shrine week, Brooks carries his weight very well while using defensive linemen's momentum against them or creating space with brute strength. Like anyone his size, Brooks needs to fire off the ball lower, but do not be surprised when he is the first non-Combine invite selected, likely in the draft's second day.

Tennessee DE/DT Malik Jackson -- I prefer Jackson at left defensive end in a 4-3 where he can burst off the edge or use persistence and power to create penetration against right tackles. After transferring from USC at 250 pounds, Jackson has efficiently bulked up to 290 -- six more pounds than he weighed in at the Combine. Jackson said himself that he is working toward appealing to 4-3 teams at defensive tackle (where he played his senior season) and has the length (6'5", 33.5" arms) to add even more mass. This kind of positional flexibility would have once drawn a "tweener" label. Instead, it is now considered positive versatility since Jackson consistently wins at any spot along the line. Admittedly, I value Jackson much more than others while giving him a mid second-round grade, but we have seen similar players like Chris Canty, Kendall Langford, and Jason Jones cash in recently. At worst, Jackson should be a fourth-round selection that will grow (or shrink) into his assigned role.

Utah State RB Michael Smith -- Teammate Robert Turbin drew most of the spotlight at Utah State, but Smith offers very intriguing skills as a third-day pick and production to prove it. At 5'8/207, Smith's results were highly impressive: 4.35 forty, 10'6" broad jump, 40.5" vertical, 23 bench press reps. Smith's running style is easy to enjoy, unafraid of contact between the tackles while sticking to his lane or flashing quick lateral movements after one step. His slight hops in traffic prevent him from losing speed while evading contact. His shorter stature forces Smith to go down on first contact often and limits his three-down ability as a pass protector, where he is consistently thrown to the side despite starting in a sound position. Smith will never be a workhorse, but the way he stays between the hashes while delivering long runs is far more preferable than LaMichael James' boundary running style, and for much a cheaper price.

Louisville TE Josh Chichester -- Standing at 6'8/245, the former wide receiver ran a 4.57 forty and leaped 38" on his vertical. Chichester lacks burst out of a three-point stance when blocking or releasing in-line, but gets down the field with long strides. Obviously he stands out as a red-zone target with a wide catch radius while using his body for positioning. Otherwise, Chichester lacks some coordination and will be unable to look fluid in routes that require more than a single break downfield. If he uses his reach when blocking and adds strength to his game, Chichester could be worth a very late-round developmental pick as a slot tight end.

Real estate market in bloom | Washington Blade - America's ...

The Spring market in D.C. bloomed with the cherry blossoms.

In the last month, we have seen almost every competitively priced listing go under contract within the first week on the market, often with interest from multiple parties and sometimes multiple offers. This time last year, we saw multiple offers but did not often see the price going above list price. Not so for this year where we have seen multiple offers escalating above list price.

While just a few months ago many buyers were still trying to ?play the market? or sit and wait for a price reduction, this is not the reality of the new spring market. Inventory has declined significantly from this point last year, so the good properties are selling and they?re selling fast.

We have also been seeing a lot of competition within the first week of a price drop ? even if the house has been on the market for months. When there is a price adjustment on a home, other buyers who have been circling may also decide to throw their hat in the ring. The result is often a multiple-offer situation even if the house has been on the market for several weeks or months. When you are in competition with another purchaser, you are competing with the other purchaser by upping your price, instead of negotiating with the seller for a lower price.

Despite the competitive market, it is still a great time for buyers. Thirty-year fixed interest rates are still hovering at a historical low.

We are seeing a healthy market?in our area. If you are thinking about buying a new home, talk with a realtor early in the process to see how the market is moving in your price point and desired location. Many realtors will set you up on a search and will email you properties that will fit your criteria. Even if you aren?t ready yet, it will help you to see what?s out there so you can make an educated decision when you are ready to buy.

'Fairly Legal' sneak peek: A conflict of interest with two clients - From ...

"Fairly Legal" returned for its second season last Friday (March 16) and with it brought a lot of changes for Kate Reid and cohorts. The firm is in financial trouble, there's a smarmy new partner to deal with, Justin laid a huge confession on Kate and then her boat blew up. Rough week.

The show is back Friday, March 23 with "Start Me Up" and Zap2it has an exclusive sneak peek clip (above), where Lauren is getting a new client - a fashion designer who wants his former employee to adhere to her non-compete agreement. The new iPhone won?t have a gigantic screen

Despite the latest rounds of super-gigantic iPhone screen size rumors, iMore is hearing that, as of last month, plans for the new iPhone (iPhone 5,1) called for the same 3.5-inch screen as previous generations. While we're told that isn't set in store, and it's possible Apple could go slightly bigger, there's doesn't seem to be any chance for anything even approaching the size of a Galaxy Nexus.

Nissan not planning Datsun for developed markets

YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) ? Nissan's revival of the Datsun won't include developed markets, Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn said Wednesday, outlining a strategy to target the revamped brand at emerging nations where the biggest growth is expected for affordable stylish vehicles.

The offerings will be tailored for each market, including price and engine size, targeting the burgeoning market of first-time car buyers in countries such as India, Indonesia and Russia, where Datsun will be introduced from 2014, he said.

Executives gave away few details, including specifics of Datsun models they had in the works.

Corporate Vice President Vincent Cobee said the new Datsuns will be entry-level cars in each nation, aimed at "up and coming" successful people who are "optimistic about the future."

He said two models will go on sale within the first year in the three nations, and an enhanced lineup of models will be offered within three years.

Nissan Motor Co. faces intense competition from rivals, including other Japanese players such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co., which all have their eyes on emerging markets that also include China, Mexico and Brazil. Growth has stagnated in recent years in more established markets such as Japan, the U.S. and Europe.

Ghosn announced Tuesday in Indonesia that the Datsun will make a comeback, three decades after the shelving of a brand that helped define not only Nissan but Japanese carmaking in the U.S., as well as in Japan. It is a name that is synonymous with affordable and reliable small cars, according to Nissan.

Datsun debuted in Japan in 1932, and hit American showrooms more than 50 years ago.

It was discontinued globally starting in 1981 to unify the model lineup under the Nissan brand. Nissan also makes Infiniti luxury models.

Tsuyoshi Mochimaru, auto analyst with Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities, said the Datsun name helps differentiate cheaper models targeting emerging markets from Nissan's other models.

"Emerging markets are where the growth is, but what will sell are cheaper cars, where profit margins will be lower," he said. "By separating the brand, you avoid hurting the value of the Nissan brand."

The new blue Datsun logo was inspired by the old one, according to Nissan.

Ghosn said Nissan has been preparing the Datsun brand for years and was already developing models. He was confident Nissan had not fallen behind rivals.

"We just see an opportunity," he told reporters. "When you're ready, you should do it."

Nissan officials acknowledged only the older generation may be familiar with the Datsun brand and it may not even be recognized in emerging markets.

But they said it stood for good styling, durability and safety.

"Datsun is part of the heritage of the company," Ghosn said. "Datsun is a good name."

Holding a gun may make you think others are too

NEW YORK (AP) ? No one knows what led a Florida neighborhood watch captain to shoot Trayvon Martin, a teenager carrying no weapon.

But a new study raises an intriguing question: Could the watch captain have been fooled into thinking the youth was armed in part because he himself was holding a gun?

In the study, volunteers who held a toy gun and glimpsed fleeting images of people holding an object were biased toward thinking the object was a gun.

It's another indication that the brain shapes what we perceive in the world beyond the information that comes in through our eyes, said James Brockmole of the University of Notre Dame, who did the work with psychologist Jessica Witt at Purdue University.

In a telephone interview, Brockmole stressed he had no inside information on the Feb. 26 shooting of 17-year-old Martin, who was shot and killed in a gated community in Sanford, a suburb of Orlando. The neighborhood watch captain, George Zimmerman, said he shot the teen in self-defense because the youth attacked him. The case has drawn outrage and protests, and the federal Department of Justice said Monday it will investigate.

Brockmole said it's possible that Zimmerman's perception might have been skewed by being armed.

Race may have also played a role. Martin is black; Zimmerman's family says he is Hispanic. Past research suggests that people can be more likely to perceive a poorly seen object as a gun if it's held by a black person than by a white person, experts say.

Zimmerman has not spoken publicly. The police report does not mention whether he thought Martin had a firearm. But during his patrol of the neighborhood in his SUV, Zimmerman called 911 and told a police dispatcher that he was following Martin. "We've had some break-ins my neighborhood. ...There is a really suspicious guy."

Then a bit later, he said the youth was approaching and "he's got something in his hands."

In the study which was carried out well before the shooting, undergraduates at Notre Dame and Purdue glimpsed scenes of people holding objects and had to decide quickly whether the object was a gun. The results showed they were biased toward thinking so if they themselves were holding a toy gun, rather than a plastic ball. Just having a gun nearby didn't make a difference, researchers found.

Why is that? Brockmole said people are primed to act in the world rather than just passively see it. So their minds have to contain information both about what they see and what they might do in response. Evidently, each kind of information can influence the other, he said.

He said the work is not intended to support gun control, but it suggests that people should know that when they hold a gun "that might change how you're going to interpret what's around you."

Brockmole's findings make sense, said Evan Risko, who studies perception and attention at Arizona State University. "Our perception is influenced by a number of different factors, and that can have important consequences," he said.

Dennis Proffitt, who studies visual perception at the University of Virginia, said there are many reasons why one person might think another is armed, such as if he is worried about his own safety or if he thinks the other person is a robber. The effect of holding a gun oneself "could be part of the story" in Florida, he said.

Importance of Self Improvement | Anyameten

Self improvement is an important way to improve and develop our work ethics and make more out of yourself and your lives. Making decisions whenever required is a must. No matter what the situation is, whether you agree or disagree, you should be prepared to take the decision. We should ensure that whatever decision we made should be to our best interest in that situation. These are the real choices if self-respect is important to us.

There are chances of promotion for any position in an organization from time to time. Any person who works hard, eagerly waiting for a promotion and is willing to take up the position will be surely noticed by the people. One must be prepared to ignore bad attitudes of colleagues or peers who does take the easy way in doing the minimum amount of work required to get by. Through Self Improvement, this can be accomplished and can make our lives much better.

Some people please themselves by doing as little as possible. Such people just beat the system or try to win over their bosses. And these people waste a lot of time complaining about peer?s attitude, petty office politics and other petty things etc. People with such a nature certainly lack the courage and ambition to make changes and probably never will do so.

Contradictory to the above there are people who are ambitious and courageous and put their efforts to the best use. Sometimes these people?s efforts are not recognized and are ignored by their bosses. In such cases moving on the is the best choice. There is no doubt that people with such ambition and work ethic will find a position or job where their efforts are recognized.

Keeping yourself updated with latest information, learning new skills and techniques and keeping yourself motivated are few things that would help in self-improvement. Now it doesn?t matter if you wish to work your way up in the corporate world, or start your own business, what matters is having strong work ethic.

PFT: Patriots sign OL Gallery

129027979_crop_650x440Getty Images

For weeks, I?ve been pushing the Tebow-to-Jacksonville or Tebow-to-Miami theory if/when Peyton Manning picks the Broncos. ?Not long after that the ?if? has become a ?when,? I reiterated that idea, throwing out the Patriots as an option that at first blush looked like a ridiculous proposition but given the presence of former Broncos coach Josh McDaniels and head coach Bill Belichick (close friend of Tebow?s former Florida coach, Urban Meyer) and in light of Belichick?s penchant for outside-the-box thinking, it makes plenty of sense to make Tebow into something other than a quarterback.

But are there other not-so-obvious destinations? ?Teams that shouldn?t be interested but, when considering all factors, maybe should be.

It?s a given that any team that acquires Tebow, whether he?s traded or, quite possibly, cut would face a significant decision: ?(1) install Tebow as the starting quarterback and design an offense that suits his strengths and minimizes his weaknesses; (2) make him a backup, part-time quarterback (which would require one playbook for Tebow and one for the ?real? quarterback); or (3) move him to a new position. ?On the other side of the coin, Tebow will generate significant interest, not just in football circles but in the mainstream media. ?Ultra-casual fans who watch only the Super Bowl will start following Tebow?s new team. ?It will be an opportunity to craft a truly national brand.

So taking those important business realities into account, let?s consider the teams that should at least have the conversation regarding whether there?s a way to bring Tebowmania to town without unnecessarily undermining football interests ? and notwithstanding Brian Billick?s warning about the Broncos? effort to move Tebow: ??If they don?t want him, why should I??

And so which teams should consider Tebow, either as a full-time quarterback (not likely), part-time gimmick quarterback (more likely) or ?football player? to be used at a position to be determined (most likely)?

1. ?The Rams. ?

They volunteered to play in England in part because they believe that it will make them like the Cowboys and Steelers. ?It won?t.

Tebow could.

Throw in the ongoing struggles to sell tickets (sellouts undoubtedly come from owner Stan Kroenke buying up the unsold seats at 34 cents on the dollar) and a possible move to Los Angeles, and Tebow makes plenty of sense wearing horns from a creature other than, you know, the devil.

2. ?The Vikings.

Speaking of horns, Tebow could help maximize local interest during what could be a lame-duck season in Minnesota. ?The Vikings are getting no closer to getting a new stadium built. ?Tebowmania could be the thing that gets it done.

3. ?The Bengals.

Wanna sell those empty seats at Paul Brown Stadium? ?Put Tebow in orange and black.

He?s relatively inexpensive, and he?d help owner Mike Brown shed, to some extent, the perception that he isn?t interested in doing something bold.

4. ?The Saints.

What better way to push the Bountygate mess off the front page than to give coach Sean Payton a unique weapon?

Once, of course, Payton?s likely suspension ends.

5. ?The Eagles.

If coach Andy Reid can?t turn Tebow into a traditional passer, no one can.

Given what Reid did with Mike Vick, the Eagles may make the most sense of any team.

6. ?The Cowboys.

America?s Team can?t be America?s Team without the most popular NFL player in America.

They?d have more than 100,000 for every home game ? assuming they can get enough seats installed in time.

7. ?The Steelers.

Offensive coordinator Todd Haley would surely love nothing more than to be the guy who finds a way to get the most out of Tebow.

Especially since his nemesis Josh McDaniels got fired before he could really try.

8. ?The Colts.

Concerned that fans won?t show up to watch a crappy team? ?Add Tebow. ?They?ll be there.

9. ?The Buccaneers.

The Bucs bought several big-name (and big-money) free agents in order to fill up a half-empty stadium.

For a lot less money, they could sell the place out every week by adding Tebow.

10. ?The Chiefs.

Spurned by Peyton Manning an developing a penchant for taking quality players cast aside by division rivals, why not give Tebow the chance to return to Denver once per year?

Maharashtra, Mumbai -- Europe is becoming increasingly dependent on a high percentage of imported generic medicines from India and China. Without the appropriate level of control and monitoring, this could easily lead to shortages and problems with supply continuity in those smaller markets. Globalisation of the generic medicines industry will bring new challenges to Europe which must be met if the sector is not to be marginalised with respect to both pricing and supply. Innovation has been traditionally perceived as the domain of the research-based originator companies. However, generic medicine companies often spend significant sums on innovating - improving formulations, enhancing delivery systems and finding solutions to patient compliance issues.

In an interview with an Indian CFO, Shantanu Kumar Singh, Taj Pharma Group,

Mr. Singh commented, "A generic medicine treatment is now available within many of the major therapeutic classes and this is often the 'gold standard' option for specific diseases. Opportunities exist to recommend schedules that encourage initiation of treatment with these 'gold standard' generic medicines. This is a positive sign which should increase the uptake of these drugs and potentially generate long-term savings through the use of a safe and effective therapy at an affordable price. "

Singh also mentions, 'In 2011, 7% of revenues from the generics medicine industry were spent on research and development alone. Furthermore, sector investments in manufacturing and development facilities have created a solid base of employment (150,000 direct employees in the EU2) yielding societal benefits that go beyond the realms of healthcare. The potential benefits of the generics medicine industry will not be maximised if the focus is on the lowest price alone. There is a need to increase the volume of generic medicines penetration in the EU market and optimise such key areas as competition with in-patent medicines, co-payment policies, time to market, and ready supply'.

What do you think about the rising costs of health care in Europe?

The provision of an effective and efficient healthcare system in any country is a complex equation balancing appropriate levels of patient care with resources available. Within this lies the need for infrastructures to support both primary and secondary care as well as associated services such as social welfare. Making direct comparisons of costs and best practices across EU member states is difficult; inherent political differences give rise to highly variable systems. No one country is the same. However, one element that is common to all and often the focus of attention is the cost of medicines. Although medicines generally constitute only around 10% of a country's total healthcare budget (with generic medicines only comprising between 1-2%) they are a prime target for cost savings - despite being arguably the most cost-effective part of the healthcare solution. However, even here, the lack of coherent policies and variations in pricing and reimbursement systems, sociodemographics and the management of healthcare within each EU member state make comparisons difficult. What works in one country may be totally inappropriate in another. One thing is certain, the ageing population and changes in lifestyle automatically bring an increased demand for

healthcare and consequent escalation of costs. Pharmaceutical expenditure has been growing at comparable rates across all the major Western markets, with the developing markets exhibiting greater growth due to expanding access to medicines. Prolonged life expectancy in diseases previously associated with high mortality is also extending the use of longer-term chronic therapy treatments, further increasing the burden on healthcare providers. It is a fundamental principle in medicine that pharmaceuticals can delay or even prevent the need for costly hospitalisation in some patients. Therapies to improve quality of life in patients with terminal diseases are also playing a growing role in the physicians' armamentarium. Against this background, it is possible to draw a correlation between life expectancy and pharmaceutical consumption.

Pharmaceuticals undeniably play an essential role in improving and maintaining health, but managing and controlling cost remains a major challenge for society, including governments and payers. Although the percentage of GDP spent on healthcare is fairly consistent in the major EU countries, the absolute amounts available are straining to deliver the desired levels of healthcare.

You're announcing strong first half results today. What's driven that performance?

Shantanu Kumar Singh, CFO (Taj Pharma Group) comments, 'I have to say I'm very, very happy, we're extremely pleased by the results that we announced today'. We're looking at revenues up by 22.6%, we're looking at our operating profits up by 40%, gross margins are almost 50%, fantastic cash flow growth by 74%, and we have a fantastic net debt to equity ratio of 18%. So we're very, very happy with these numbers. I've always said that this is a very well diversified business, and we have three main engines that continuously feed this growth. So this year for the first half, the US Generic business did extremely, extremely well, so we're very happy with that. That has been fantastic growth. Our Injectable business for the first half was very good also, we're very happy with that. And the Brand business, as we had previously said, would this year be split almost evenly between the first half and second half. So the Brand business was stable and we are looking at very good growth in the Brand business for the second half of the year. So overall, all three engines have been performing quite well, and the diversity and diversification has come in and worked again to give us these fantastic results....
